How do you know AI sent a guest to your lodge?
Zoe checks in on a Friday already knowing the name of the room she wants. Nobody told her. Something did, and your booking report has no field for it.
How did Zoe find you?
She asked Alexa, three weeks before the trip, where to stay on the coast that was not a chain. Two names came back and yours was one of them.
She wrote it down. Then she opened Expedia, found you listed there, and booked the way she has always booked.
Whether Zoe had asked Alexa, ChatGPT, Siri, Gemini or Perplexity, the next part is the same.
Why does that reach you as a commission line?
Because Expedia is the only party in the chain that left a record. Your own booking engine never saw Zoe. The agency reports her as an agency booking, and you pay commission on a guest an AI answer sent you for nothing.
The referral was real. It simply arrived wearing somebody else’s name, and the invoice is the only paperwork it generated.
What is the one field to change?
The source question — in the booking engine, and again at the desk. Most lists offer a version of Google, Repeat Guest, Travel Agent, Friend, Other, and none of them fit what Zoe did.
Name ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in the option. An abstraction is a box nobody ticks.
Then ask again at the desk, out loud — because Zoe booked through Expedia and never saw your form. She is the guest you most need to hear from, and the one your own systems cannot reach.
What did Zoe say at check-in?
She asked for the courtyard rooms by name, and that phrase is nowhere in your marketing. It came from a description of you that you did not write.
Keep a note of those for a month. A guest who asks about the breakfast that runs late, or the path down to the water, read that somewhere. What you end up with is a fairly exact picture of which parts of your website were found worth repeating, and which were ignored.
What did Zoe want to know before she arrived?
Three things your website does not answer — and that is the most useful sentence in this article. Every question several guests ask before arriving is a page you have not written.
ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer from what they can find. When they cannot find your cancellation terms, your pet policy, the distance from the airport, or whether the restaurant is open on a Monday in February, they either skip you or guess.
Writing those answers on a page you own is the cheapest item here, and the only one that changes what the next Zoe is told before she books.
What is the simplest thing to do on Monday?
Three things, none of which need a developer.
Put ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity in the source question in your booking engine. Ask arriving guests how they found you, and write down their words. Then ask the three of them where somebody should stay in your area, and keep the answer with the date on it.
One more thing to watch. Direct bookings and branded searches rising while your ad spend and social reach stay flat is a pattern with only so many explanations. It is circumstantial — but a business that never looks at the shape cannot notice when it changes.
Do that for a month and you will know more about this than almost anybody in your market.
Common questions
How can a hotel or lodge tell if AI referred a guest?
Add an option that names ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to the source question in your booking engine, and ask arriving guests how they found you. Many AI-referred guests still book through an online travel agency, so the arrival conversation catches what your booking data cannot.
Why do AI-referred guests still book through an online travel agency?
Habit. ChatGPT or Alexa may name your property directly, and the guest then books the way they always have. The referral is real but arrives labeled as an agency booking, which is why asking at arrival matters.
What do repeated guest questions tell us about our website?
That the answer is not written anywhere ChatGPT or Gemini can read it. A question several guests ask before arriving is a page worth writing, and it often changes what ChatGPT and Gemini say about you afterwards.
